The Experience Fallacy
Hey friends, happy Sunday!
I skipped last weeks newsletter and headed to Portugal where I gained myself some gnarly sun burn (in October I know 🌝) and a beautiful fiancée.
Alrighty let's get into this weeks Filter!
The Experience Fallacy
Experience is overvalued.
And a lack of experience is a rubbish excuse for not doing something.
If you want to do something you've never done before your brain will immediately retreat to safety mode.
You'll start making up excuses as to why 'now is not the right time' or how 'I'll be better equipped in a few years time'.
But this is your brain doing mental gymnastics to avoid potentially uncomfortable situations.
Whenever I catch my mind ramping up for another gymnastics session I remind myself everyone is making it up as they go along and no one really knows what they are doing.
The only way to build experience is through taking chances.
Don't let fear dictate your progress.

Productivity started as a measure of economic output.
But now it's about achieving the results you want with less time and effort.

“Truth is, young creative minds don’t need more ideas, they need to take more responsibility with the ideas they’ve already got.” - Scott Belsky, Entrepreneur
How to Get Rich by Felix Dennis: This book fits on the shelf of scammy sounding title but great book, right alongside The Four Hour Work Week & I Will Teach You To Be Rich.
Felix Dennis shares a unique set of life experiences and lessons learned along the way as he built multiple companies and a networth of over $300 million dollars.
Exerting energy produces more energy:
Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about how whenever I exert energy I tend to have more energy. And whenever I ‘relax’ and lounge around I tend to feel more tired.
This short thread touches on some similar ideas I think are broadly true, through consuming less and doing more you’d likely have more energy.
As people always say “if you want something done give it to a busy person”.
How to become an expert: I’m fascinated by the intersection of creativity and systems. On the surface they seem to be opposed but everyone who becomes an ‘expert’ in their field seems to find a way to design processes + systems for consistent creation, which leads them on the path to becoming experts.

The Sunday Filter relies on word of mouth to reach more people, if you’re enjoying the newsletter I’d really appreciate you sending it to a friend or sharing on Twitter.
Have a fantastic week!
