Knowledge is not understanding
Heyo, as always I've spent all week hunting down interesting ideas so you can feast like a king 🥩
First off, I mentioned sharing my Notion template for managing freelance projects in this video, if you want to get in on that then just click this link (it will take you to a GIF) and I will be sure to send it to you when it's ready.
Second, thanks to this newsletter + twitter + generally sharing things on the internet I have an awesome opportunity to work with the team at Clipt who create dope animations like these (1,2,3) over the next couple of months. I'll be sharing everything I'm learning in this newsletter.
Alrighty enough from me, let's get into the Filter!
Knowledge is not understanding
The more you learn, the more you realise that knowledge is not understanding.
On the surface splitting the two seems pedantic. If you learn a mental model or a framework you understand it right?
Well, not exactly.
See, I can tell you that "compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world" and share exactly how it works, but until I experienced compound interest at play in my own life I never fully understood it.
No matter how much wisdom you gather, if you haven't lived the experiences that lead up to that wisdom you are gathering knowledge, not understanding.
I.
"If I have an apple and you have an apple and we exchange them, we both still have one apple. However, if I have an idea and you also have an idea and we exchange them, we both have two ideas."
—George Bernard Shaw
II.
The internet disproportionately rewards those who put in the extra effort to stand out.
Steve Jobs Archive: Steve Jobs lived by a set of ideals, this website curates his speeches and emails to himself on those ideals. This site is a fantastic rabbit hole to go down and the website nerd in me appreciates how well this site is built 👀
How the World’s Wealthiest People Travel: This video is fascinating. So many things in this video are absolutely crazy to me but the most crazy is super rich people have ships that transport their Yachts around the world to follow the annual calendar of events billionaires attend (like Wimbledon and the Monaco Grand Prix) 🤯
Video games improve cognitive skills: This study found that kids who played video games for three hours or more per day performed better on cognitive skills tests involving impulse control and working memory compared to children who had never played video games.
As someone framed it in this Reddit thread “Video games are just fancy puzzles”.
**BONUS FIND**
A daily run pt2: Derek Sivers writing always hits the spot, in this piece he shares how it might be a good idea to adopt beliefs that help you to take actions towards the outcomes you want.
"Actions come from emotions. Emotions come from beliefs. So choose whatever belief makes you take the action you want."
END NOTE
The Sunday Filter relies on word of mouth to reach more people, if you’re enjoying the newsletter I’d really appreciate you sending it to a friend or sharing on Twitter.
Have a fantastic week!
