On learning, pessimism & self-belief
Edition #056
Hey friends,
I hope you're having a great week!
Ideas from me
I.
The best way to learn faster is to have skin in the game.
It's easy to give up when there's nothing on the line, use things like money, reputation and pride as levers.
You learn quickly when there's something at stake.
II.
Pessimism kills dreams.
Whenever someone comes to you with an idea default to optimism, say "why not?" instead of telling them why not.
III.
Self-belief needs evidence.
The best way to build self-belief is through building momentum. Get one small win on the board, then another. Increase the size of those wins every time.
My Favourite Finds
Ladders of Wealth Creation: In a talk with a friend, I was recently reminded of this great article from Nathan Barry on building wealth. As I was reading this post it was eerie how perfectly my career has aligned with the framework that Nathan Barry lays out and how now might be the time to jump ladders.
"Consistently reinvesting time and money into wealth creation rather than lifestyle inflation can have incredible results if allowed to play out for long enough."
Rebase: This company is fascinating, Rebase is essentially immigration as a service. They match you with lawyers and accountants familiar with Portuguese immigration and help you apply for residency. Having looked into gaining residency myself, this type of service makes things 10x easier and there’s plenty of space to build the same service for other countries.
High Agency: It’s no surprise that the highest achievers are typically those with high agency, people who feel a sense of control over how their lives play out and the ability to change directions. This post breaks down the science behind agency, how some people naturally have high agency and how to increase control over your own life.
American Kingpin: The story of Silk Road is almost surreal, this week I’ve completely binge listened to this audiobook and I highly recommend doing the same.
End note
