Shifting Gears
Edition #042
Hey friends, happy Sunday!
βοΈ It's a short and sweet filter this week as I'm in the midst of a transition in my business and I wanted to share a quick update with you.
I've wanted to create content and build products for a long time, really ever since I started my business 4 years ago. But there has always been an excuse not to.
Over the last year I've started to dip my toes in the water but never really committed, whenever things got tricky it was easy to fall back and prioritise freelance work in favour of building my own asset.
This is partly down to freelancing having linear rewards (do this work then get paid) and partly down to the fact that making things on the internet is scary.
As someone who likes to go all in on things I've finally made the decision to go all in on becoming a content creator and product builder.
I am not going to talk in detail about my plans because talking is easy, it's doing that is hard.
I will still be taking on freelance work to bridge the gap financially but working to go full time on content and products over the next year or two.
If you're enjoying the newsletter it would do me a huge favour if you could share it with a few friends :)
Here are this weeks finds:

On the current & the wind
β(Article)
πΆ I love the analogy Seth Godin makes in this post, he talks about how the wind (noise) gets all the attention but the current is what matters (signal).
"On a river, itβs the current that will move the canoe far more than the wind will. But the wind distracts us."

On testosterone
β(Article)
π This week a lot of entrepreneurs and investors were talking about a company they recently invested in that provides testosterone replacement therapy.
Those posts came across as an endorsement for a treatment that can have huge negative implications for mens health, drastically lowering your own ability to create testosterone amongst a load of other potential downsides.
I found this whole thing fascinating so I did some research into testosterone and found some really interesting posts.
If you're a man I'd highly recommend reading up on this stuff, the best place to start is this post below.

On how to improve your speech
β(Article)
π£ When we want to improve at something deliberate practice is the most obvious way to do so.
But for some reason, we usually only apply this to skills like writing or coding.
When I recently started making videos I had to edit myself talking a lot and I realised that even though I thought I was better than average I was still kinda dreadful. Since then I've tried a few things from watching great speakers to trying to stop fillers like "uhm" and "you know".
This week I stumbled on this framework from David Perell and it's helped a lot. He says there are two buckets to improving your speech.
- What to stop doing
- What to start doing
You'd be amazed by how much your speaking abilities improve just by removing little phrases that inhibit your vocabulary.

One interesting idea
"In Greek, βleisureβ is rendered as scholΓ©βthat is, school. Leisure historically meant simply freedom from the work needed to survive, freedom for intellectual or creative pursuits. It was learning and study and the pursuit of higher things." - Ryan Holiday
